Why Your Doctor Keeps Asking About Sleep Before Anything Else

The question behind the question.

By Real Breakthroughs Staff

Patients often notice that a good doctor asks about sleep before asking about diet, weight, or stress. That order is deliberate. Sleep is the one variable that moves almost every other number on the chart.

What short sleep does

Blood pressure runs higher. Blood sugar handling gets worse. Appetite hormones tilt toward hunger. Pain feels louder. Mood drops. None of that shows up as “tired” on a lab report, but it shows up everywhere else.

The honest question

The useful number is not hours in bed. It is how many mornings a week you wake up without an alarm and feel like yourself. If the answer is “rarely,” that is the place to start before any supplement or plan.

Small fixes that hold

A fixed wake time, daylight within an hour of waking, and no screens in the last half hour. Boring, and the most consistently effective advice in the field.
